EHUMC MIDWEEK DEVOTIONAL

From the desk of Pastor Steve

17 So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! (2 Corinthians 5:17)

Easter has come and gone, Jesus is risen and the resurrection celebrated, eggs have all been hidden and found, lunch with family or friends is over and now it’s time to move on to the next!

Do you ever get caught in the immediacy of the next day and tend to look at Easter as a celebration in the past, rather than a miracle that shapes your present and future?

Easter is a reality that is at the core of our faith. It is the reason we have hope and the possibility of a fresh start that our hearts desire. The empty tomb and Jesus raised from the dead is reason for us to hope for change in our lives and the possibility of something new emerging within us!

The Apostle Paul, once saw followers of Jesus as fools and heretics who must be stopped at any cost that is until he had an encounter with Jesus that dramatically changed his life. The lens that Paul used to view the world by, was dramatically altered because of Jesus, and he saw everything in a new light.

In 2 Corinthians 5:17 Paul reminds us of our status as a new creation, the things of the world that once filled our lives – pride, sin, lusts, gossip, greed, and selfish passions – all are gone and replaced with the new person in Christ Jesus. As new creatures, the old things have died, and have been nailed to the cross and now we live our lives for God rather than ourselves.

Questions to consider:

How will you live your life differently as a new creation?

What old habits do you need to leave behind now that you have been made new?

Prayer:

Jesus, thank you for the new, spiritual life you given me! I pray for Your help to turn from my old ways and to live my life knowing that I am holy and new because of You! Let your Holy Spirit transform me from within so that I can become the new creation You promise. Amen!

Note: Since the early days of the pandemic, members of our staff have provided weekly devotions to help our congregation stay connected and encouraged during a very challenging season! With the easing of the pandemic and increased accessibility to attend church, bible studies and other fellowship opportunities we have decided to end our weekly devotions. We hope you have been blessed and inspired by these reflections on faith!
